Safe and Sound Protocol (SSP) - Other complaints & applications

When you don't always feel and respond as you would like. And you are looking for a gentle, guided way to support your nervous system and change this

Your complaint may be very specific. But the underlying pattern is often the same: your system is quicker to ‘turn on,’ slower to recover, and stimuli come in harder.

“I've tried so much, but my body keeps reacting,” he said.”

“My head gets it. My body doesn't.”

When what you feel is not always logical and explainable, but recognizable

People who land on this page often identify with a combination of:

Being more easily overstimulated (noise, light, crowds, social stimuli)
Slow recovery after a busy day or conversation
Brain fog, loss of concentration or ‘cotton wool in the head’ on strain
Post-viral symptoms (ME/CFS, Long Covid): rapid energy crashes, PEM and sensitivity to stimuli
Experiencing a ’rebound’ (PEM): only hours to 1-2 days later more symptoms after minor exertion
Body tension (neck/shoulders/jaw) not dropping on its own
Tinnitus, hyperacusis, misophonia or general noise sensitivity
Need earplugs/noise canceling, but still run out quickly
Restlessness in the body (palpitations, agitation, short fuse)
Headache or migraine-like patterns when stressed
Gastrointestinal stress (tension on the stomach, fluctuating bowel movements, ‘knot in the stomach’)
More withdrawn or less social because contact takes a lot of energy

Sometimes there is an obvious cause. Sometimes there isn't. In either case, it can be helpful to look at the nervous system as a common factor.

Why the SSP can be helpful in various complaints

The Safe and Sound Protocol (SSP) was developed for situations where the problem is not just insight or motivation, but how the autonomic nervous system processes security and stimuli.

SSP is based on polyvocal theory (Dr. Stephen Porges) and uses specially processed music to support the auditory system and the ‘social engagement system.

This can help the nervous system to:

  • Less likely to slip into stress reactions (fight/flight/freeze)
  • Faster return to rest and recovery
  • Processing stimuli more gently (without ‘pushing everything away’)
  • Experiencing more space for connection, contact and regulation

Important: SSP is not relaxation music. It is a clinically developed listening protocol that we carefully build and guide.

The autonomic nervous system influences many body processes

The autonomic nervous system runs in the background. With prolonged stress, not only your feelings shift, but also your physical balance.

For example, consider influencing:

  • Sleep and recovery (falling asleep, sleeping through, waking up with ‘reserve’)
  • Breathing and heart rate (hyperventilation, agitation, palpitations)
  • Digestion and stomach (gastrointestinal complaints, appetite, ‘knot in the stomach’)
  • Muscle tension and pain (neck/jaw/pelvic floor, headaches, tense body)
  • Energy management and load capacity (drain faster, take longer to recover)
  • Cognition and stimulus processing (brain fog, concentration, filtering of stimuli)
  • Social engagement (eye contact, voice/intonation, ability to stay ‘open’ in contact)

SSP helps your body through hearing to feel safe more often. When that base becomes calmer, many people notice improvement in multiple areas. So it is not a “quick fix” for one complaint, but support for the underlying processes.

Here you can read more about different topics that the SSP helps with

1. Sensory hypersensitivity (stimuli come in harder).

With sensory hypersensitivity, it feels like your ‘filter’ has become thin: sound, light, crowds or touch come in louder and your system shoots into stress or shutdown faster.

Your ears are not separate from your stress system. SSP uses your hearing to bring your body into a safe state more often. As a result, stimuli feel less overwhelming and you recover more quickly.

Why this is relevant:

Sound is a way for your brain to check: am I safe? When sound feels unsafe, your body reacts more quickly with stress or withdrawal. SSP quietly trains your auditory system to process sound as safe again more often. Thus, stimuli come in less loudly and you return to balance faster.

You often recognize this with this theme:

  • More quickly overexcited by noise, light or crowds
  • Difficulty with background noise (office garden, supermarket, voices mixed together)
  • Strong reaction to certain sounds (misophonia) or general noise sensitivity (hyperacusis)
  • Need longer recovery after social engagements or stimulating days
  • Faster ‘shutting down’ or retreating to regulate

Auditory stimulus processing:

  • Tinnitus (We use a special listening schedule for this)
  • Hyperacusis and general noise sensitivity
  • Misophonia (certain sounds that go ‘through the marrow’)
  • Stress reactions to voices/pressure/echo chambers

2. Post-viral symptoms (ME/CFS, Long Covid): additional safe build-up

After a virus, three things often come together: being “on” quickly, being sensitive to stimuli and PEM (a later relapse after little strain). That's why we build extra quietly. This is not a luxury, but safety.

SSP does not target the virus, but supports the nervous system. More physiological safety often means less escalation to stimuli and faster access to recovery. Therefore, it can be a useful adjunct to pacing and medical management. People before you called it an indispensable part of their recovery.

3. Recovery & taxability

  • Slow recovery after work, social engagements or stimulating days
  • Cognitive overload (brain fog, difficulty switching gears)
  • Recovery after prolonged stress or illness (including post-viral symptoms: with additional gentle build-up and pacing)

What people often notice after SSP:

  • Recover faster after a busy day or stimulating situation
  • More energy reserve at the end of the day
  • Fewer ‘crashes’ after exercise or social interactions
  • Clearer head and better concentration
  • Being able to switch better between activity and rest
  • Prolonged loading is better tolerated

4. Body-centered stress patterns.

  • Chronic muscle tension (neck/jaw/pelvic floor) that does not subside on its own
  • ‘On position’ with restlessness in the chest/abdomen
  • Functional complaints that clearly move with stress load

What people often notice after SSP:

  • Less chronic muscle tension in neck, shoulders and jaw
  • The body can release and ‘sink’ more easily’
  • Less restlessness and agitation in the chest and abdomen
  • Functional complaints diminish as nervous system comes to rest
  • More in touch with one's own body and better recognition of body signals
  • The ‘on state’ turns from chronic to incidental

5. Social functioning & connection

  • Social tension, clamming up, difficulty with small talk or groups
  • Quickly becoming exhausted from contact, then needing recovery
  • Difficulty staying ‘open’ in conversation (more quickly defensive or withdrawing)

SSP works on the social engagement system: a network in your brain and nervous system that helps you feel connection and safety. When this system functions better, social situations often become less threatening and again fun to participate in.

What people often notice after SSP:

  • Connecting more easily with others, including strangers
  • Less shyness and social anxiety in conversations
  • Others are no longer unconsciously perceived as threatening or dangerous
  • Speaking in front of groups or in meetings feels less overwhelming
  • Social situations cost less energy and give up more
  • Easier to stay ‘open’ in conversation, even when things get tense
  • Greater sense of connection and presence with others

6. Addiction, cravings & self-regulation (supplemental)

The SSP can help if you are quick to reach for food or alcohol when stressed. Not as a separate treatment, but as additional support within counseling. As your nervous system calms down, it becomes easier to make the right choices.

Applications:

  • Food addiction / emotion eating / strong cravings
  • Alcohol addiction or problematic alcohol use (always in coordination with your practitioner; in cases of dependence, medical supervision is important)
  • Possibly also supportive of other addictive or compulsive patterns, when stress regulation and ‘shutdown/overdrive’ play a clear role

Mechanism of action (in plain language):

In addiction, a drug or habit is often quick to help dampen something: tension, anxiety, emptiness or stimuli. SSP addresses not the “drug,” but the underlying stress state in the body. If your nervous system can switch to safety more often can switch, it becomes easier to inhibit impulses, sleep and carry emotions. This also makes it more realistic to sustain therapy and lifestyle changes.

Important: SSP is not a substitute for addiction treatment. In cases of severe dependence, withdrawal symptoms or safety risks, we initiate only in close coordination with (primary) physician and/or addiction treatment.

🌿

Tranquility, Calmness & Self-Regulation

Many clients report a profound shift in how they respond to the world.

Elena

“I noticed physical sensations and traumatic memories came up, but this has made me realize that I need to rest. I now have less restlessness and a gnawing sense of insecurity. The realization that it is literally in my body was an eye opener.”

Oliver

“I really notice a difference. I am calmer and sense stimuli much better. I now notice when I'm tired, something I used to ignore.”

Sophie

“I used to suffer from social anxiety, sweaty hands and heat attacks in groups. Suddenly I noticed that this was much less. My friend called me ‘another Sophie.’ A burden fell off my shoulders.”

Lucas

“I often fall asleep while listening to Core, but I wake up with a relaxation I've never felt before. My body feels its own again.”

Martina

“I feel much more present and calm. It gives me space to make inner decisions before I react to anything.”

🛌

Sleep & Energy Recovery

A restored nervous system often means a dramatic improvement in sleep and energy levels.

Sebastian

“I am calmer and sleep better. My blood sugar has even improved after 6 months of SSP and RRP.”

Sarah

“I sleep super well (really MEGA happy about it) and my energy levels are better. I am recovering from burnout and can exercise again.”

Jacob

“The support is unexpectedly good. I'm very emotional during periods, but that's part of it. I continue motivated.”

Pia

“Small steps worked well. After just a few days I was calmer and persistent digestive problems improved noticeably.”

Julian

“I come from far away. Meditation didn't help, but by shifting my attention to hearing, I regain control of my life.”

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦

Children & Family Dynamics

The protocol affects not only the individual, but often the entire family.

Isabelle on her son Leo

“After three hours of listening, he wets the bed less and is much more attentive. He now knows where he leaves his things, something that was impossible before. He is softer and calmer.”

Jen about her son Ben

“Within 2 weeks he was daring new things on the playground. After 4 weeks, he was a different child: he plays, climbs and asks for hugs. Even my husband, who was skeptical, is now a ‘believer’.”

Ingrid

“Family life has not been this peaceful in 10 years. My husband is much more relaxed and our son is cooperative and loving. He says every day now that he loves us.”

Hannah

“The teacher saw that Leo entered the classroom without tension. His self-confidence grew and his motor skills became smoother.”

🔥

Deep Healing & Trauma

For clients with complex trauma (CPTSD) or deep dysregulation, the protocols offer a safe way in.

“What I'm also already noticing is that my awareness is changing. I am more aware of myself. My patterns, strategies, thoughts, etc. That's also a little tiring, but I'm able to sustain it well.”

- Gerhard
Angela

“I experience more 3D and 4D experience; colors are more vivid. It feels like all my senses are getting ‘juice’ again.”

Clara (CFS client)

“Everyone with ME/CFS should know about this. It's a gamechanger. I'm not just lying flat anymore, I can do small exercises again.”

Nicolette

“During a retreat, the floodgates opened completely. I finally felt connected to the group instead of disconnected. RRP led me to a soft, deep inner space.”

Scott

“As a Zen practitioner, I find that SSP helps me achieve a calmer state in the midst of chronic Lyme symptoms. I feel more space between a trigger and my response.”

Kiki

“Emotions flow through it without major disruption afterwards. I feel like I would be a different person if I complete the full five hours.”
